How the Vocal Came to Be

In 1981, David and Sherri Bird were neighbors of ours. We all lived in university student housing at the time. Every bit we got to know the Birds, I showed Sherri a tune I wrote, that had been used in a stage musical called Can't Stand All the same! The song was never included in the live production. In that location were some reservations nearly it, so I took it out of the show. The show seemed to have its run (45 performances at Robert Redford's Sundance Outdoor Theater—now defunct), with no other hereafter prospects, so information technology reinforced my idea of removing from the show and remaking it as a Christmas vocal.

Sherri took the photocopy of my mitt-drawn manuscript with the crossed out original lyrics and said, "Let me think near it. If it'due south going to exist a Christmas song, information technology needs to be something different."

Several months went by. I wondered if anything would come of information technology, only I received an unexpected call around x pm on a Sun evening.

Dan: "How-do-you-do."

David: "Are you in your PJs yet?"

Dan:(quite perplexed) "No, (pause, contemplating hanging up) are you?"

David: "You mean I didn't catch you lot in bed? Well, what are you doing then?"

Dan: "Who is this?"

David: "How soon can you be over here?"

Dan: "I don't think I desire to be over at that place."

David: "Sherri finished the vocal. How before long can y'all exist here?!"

Dan: "Oh! This is Bird! We'll exist in that location in x minutes!"

Nosotros all sat down and Sherri sat at the piano and played and sang. She high-strung up a little when she sang "do non despair, your star is still there." In fact, we were all unexpectedly emotional about the message of this song. Little did I know how my life would change in the coming years. I had no idea of the catastrophic losses of loved ones, homes, belongings and income ahead of me. I couldn't have ever predicted that I would exist shunned by people and organizations I thought would e'er love and accept me. I had no idea that I would one day, myself, look in the sky in anger and wonder why such things happened not simply to me but to those I loved.

But the years have changed me. For the better. I take learned that my star is still at that place. I have learned that vocal wasn't written as a gift for everyone else, it was written as a gift to me, also. No ane escapes the awful stuff in life. But it is how we cull to permit information technology bear upon the states that defines our path. We tin swallow our ain bitterness and detest and thus poison ourselves and everyone around us, or we can learn the lessons life has handed united states and find our peace. Detect that connection with that star that never stops shining, the Presence in the universe that keeps us from always beingness lone, those "smiling eyes, shining up at me."

Hi Dan,

Loved reading nearly the background of this beautiful song. I have choked upwards many a time singing that phrase "exercise not despair, your star is still there" when I felt beyond promise and in deep despair. Thanks for this song that has fed my soul and helped heal my eye.

When I was a teenager in the belatedly 80's and early ninety's, my stake used to hold a Christmas Cantata every year, and I would participate. This vocal was chosen ane year by our director. I used to memorize the music considering I hated holding information technology. My sister (also a function of the choir) and I would sing this song in harmony together for years. Nosotros forgot the later on parts, and the name of the song, but it ever had special meaning for me, and during hard times throughout my life, I would sing equally much as I could remember. Today, I googled the offset like "the night was long, we traveled far" and constitute this website. I cannot access youtube here from work, but fifty-fifty after 20+ years, I could sing every notation as I finally had all the words in forepart of me. Tears are streaming down my face as I sing it again and again in total now. I just wanted you to know that your vocal has been close to my heart for more than 2 decades. Cheers.

I've been looking for this song! I Absolutely Honey Information technology! Our high school choir (directed by a David Bird!) has our students sing it, often! Makes me weep, every time! It gives me chills, and brings tears to my optics, each and every fourth dimension, too! 1 sister, for our sister's church social Christmas dinner, sang this as a solo, and I Still recollect how beautifully she sang it! Thank you for posting this! Sure enjoyed hearing it, again!

Robert Redford's theater at Sundance, though non hosting quite equally robust a summer theater season as it once did, is far from defunct. In that location are even so concerts there every year in the summertime by regional and national acts. It's a lovely, lovey space in which to see a evidence, and in which to perform one. And people still accept opportunity for both.
